How the One Rep Max Calculator Works

Your one rep max (1RM) is the heaviest weight you can lift for a single repetition of an exercise. Rather than risk a true maximal attempt, this calculator estimates your 1RM from a set you performed with a lighter weight for several reps. You enter the weight lifted and the number of clean reps, and it projects the single-rep maximum. This makes it easy to gauge strength and plan training loads safely.

The Formula

The default is the Epley formula: 1RM = weight × (1 + reps / 30). For example, benching 80 kg for 6 reps gives 80 × (1 + 6/30) = 96 kg. A close alternative is the Brzycki formula, 1RM = weight × 36 / (37 − reps), which produces very similar numbers in the low-rep range. Both convert submaximal performance into a maximal-strength estimate.

Interpreting Your Result

The estimate is most accurate when drawn from a set of roughly 2 to 6 reps performed close to failure with good form. As reps climb higher, muscular endurance rather than pure strength starts to dominate, and the projection drifts upward from your real max. Use the number as a working reference point, and recalculate periodically as your strength changes rather than treating any single estimate as fixed.

When to Use It

A 1RM estimate is the backbone of percentage-based strength programming, where sets are prescribed at, say, 70-85% of your max. It lets you set appropriate loads, track progress, and compare lifts without repeatedly testing under a maximal bar. Results are estimates for general information only; lift within your ability, warm up thoroughly, use a spotter for heavy work, and consult a qualified coach or healthcare professional if you have any injury concerns.
